suitableconditionsforthepursuitofself-development,whiletheyareonactiveduty.
Duringthepastfiveyears,theROKandtheUnitedStateshavefortifiedourmilitaryalliance.Wecreateda
new‘Korea-U.S.IntegratedDefenseDialogue(KIDD)’toenhancetheefficiencyofoursecurityconsultative
apparatus.Furthermore,tocountserNorthKorea’snuclearandmissilethreats,wehavecontinuedtodevelopan
effectiveextendeddeterrencestrategyandpoliciesdesignedtobolsterprecisionstrikecapabilities.
Throughtheexpansionosfglobalpeacekeepingactivities,theROKArmedForcesarefulfillingourresponsi-
bilitytotheinternationalcommunityonalevelsthatisbefittingournationalpower.Intheprocess,weare
enhancingourglobalstatureasadefenderofworldpeace.FollowingthedeploymentoftheDongmyeongUnit
toLebanosn,theCheonghaeUnittotheGulfofAden,theAshenaUnittoAfghanistan,theDanbiUnittoHaiti,
andtheAkhUnittotheUnitedArabEmirates,weareplanningtodeployapeacekeepingunittoSouthSudan.
The2012DefenseWhitePaperisarepresentationosfthedirectionosftheROK’sdefensepolicy,itscurrent
status,andtheMND’splansforrealizingournationalsecuritystrategy.Inparticular,thepublicationcontains
detailedassessmentsofNorthKorea’sthreatandthereadinesspostureofourArmedForces.Italsocontainsa
descriptionosfoureffortstotransformintoacombat-centricelitemilitary.ThehistoryoftheROK-U.S.alliance,
thepeacekeepingeffortsofourArmedForces,andavarietyofotherdefense-relatedmaterialscanbefoundin
theappendix.
AstheguardianosftheROKandasaglobalmilitaryforce,ourArmedForceswillstrivetobecomeacombat
mission-orientedadvancedmilitarythatupholdspeaceontheKoreanPeninsula,andcontributestosimilarefforts
ontheinternationalstage.YourcontinuedsupporttotheROKArmedForceswouldbegreatlyappreciated.
